Lancaster, PA, is a Manufacturing Hotspot

When you think about Lancaster, PA, the first images that come to mind are the big local Amish communities. In most people's minds, Lancaster is a place for buggies and butter churns, quilting bees and the occasional barn raising. The popular image is light-years away from a thriving industrial hub that serves one of the most densely populated urban areas in the Western Hemisphere. However, Lancaster is a small community that just happens to occupy a central location in what is arguably the richest and busiest local economy. LINK Pennsylvania East, the area's leading business brokerage, helps clients buy and sell manufacturing businesses in this area, and prospects are excellent.

The Lovely Land of Lancaster

Lancaster is both a city and a county in the eastern lowlands of Pennsylvania. The county is mostly rural, and it's very close to the portrayal of it in the media. Tourists come to see how the local religious communities live their generally low-tech lifestyles and to buy some of their excellent handmade goods. The farm country gradually gives way to the suburbs of Lancaster city, however, and suddenly it's as if the slide has changed on a projector. Tall buildings hold thousands of white collar office spaces, where the work of the region's hundreds of manufacturers gets done. Factories line the roads in Lancaster and operate in an area that has historically been one of the great capitals of the Industrial Revolution.

What Makes Lancaster, PA, Such a Great Place for Manufacturing?

This, somewhat less famous, side of Lancaster didn't pop up overnight, but it did grow over the centuries as the eastern region of Pennsylvania was redefining manufacturing. There are several local advantages for manufacturers that make Lancaster the ideal spot to set up shop.

One is its fantastic location. Philadelphia, for example, sits almost halfway between New York City and Washington D.C., which gives it all the traffic a modern transportation hub can handle. Harrisburg, the state capital, likewise straddles the good land between the Allegheny Mountains and the deep coal and iron basins of the western part of the state. Lancaster is similarly well positioned, between Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

Another big advantage Lancaster has for manufacturing are the great local resources. From the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution, Lancaster's access to the Susquehanna River gave it not only transportation, but power for the local mills. When coal plants replaced waterwheels, it was discovered Lancaster has coal as well, and a lot of it to spare. When the newly electrified factories sprang up on the shores of Lake Clarke, they found themselves connected to their markets via some of America's densest rail lines and eventually interstate highways. This all drew excellent human capital to the region, as skilled workers from as far away as Connecticut came to try their hands at machine shop work and heavy industry.
